68% of people killed by the Columbus Police from 2013-2019 were black.

What is over-policing?

Over-policing is the act of policing excessively and aggressively by having a large police presence in a specific area and responding to situations, including minor offenses in a combative way.

Columbus police department’s history of aggressive, racialized, and militarized tactics, proves there is a need for a nonpolice response for non-violent crises. This includes wellness checks, mental health crises, suicide attempts, homelessness, and low-level conflicts between neighbors.

In 2023, the City of Columbus allocated $1.2M to a non-police response program but a program has yet to be implemented.
